Der queere philippinische Verein Kulay lädt gemeinsam mit Vienna Pride zu einem besonderen Abend ins Filmhaus am Spittelberg ein: BILLIE & EMMA erzählt eine berührende queere Coming-Of-Age-Geschichte über die erste Liebe und Selbstbestimmung. Der Film spielt Mitte der 90er Jahre und erzählt die Geschichte von Billie, einem Mädchen, das aus Manila in eine kleine Provinzstadt verbannt wird, um dort bei ihrer unverheirateten Tante zu leben, die auch die Religionslehrerin der Stadt ist. Obwohl sie versucht, ihr letztes Schuljahr ohne Zwischenfälle zu überstehen, sorgt sie schon bei ihrer Ankunft mit ihrem coolen Look und ihrer unkonventionellen Art für Gesprächsstoff. Billie versucht, sich vor der Welt zu verstecken, bis sie Emma kennenlernt, die ehrgeizige Musterschülerin, die von allen verehrt wird. Anfangs ist der Umgang miteinander etwas unbeholfen, doch Emma holt Billie langsam aus ihrer Reserve, und bald verlieben sich die beiden ineinander. Doch die Lage wird kompliziert, als Emma herausfindet, dass sie schwanger ist…

Regisseurin Samantha Lee knüpft an ihren Debütfilm BAKA BUKAS (OAFF 2017) mit einem unbeschwerten Coming-of-Age-Film an, der die Selbstbestimmung von Frauen in einer Geschichte thematisiert, in der die Figuren wirklich herausfinden können, wen sie lieben und welche Zukunft sie sich für sich selbst wünschen.

Set in the mid-90’s, the film tells the story of Billie, a girl exiled from Manila to a small provincial town to live with her spinster aunt who is also the town’s religion teacher. Despite trying to get through the last year of high school without incident, the moment she enters the place she sets tongues wagging with her cool look and different attitude. Billie tries to hide herself from the world until she meets Emma, the ambitious, star student who everyone idolises. Initially awkward with each other, Emma slowly coaxes Billie out of her shell and they soon fall in love but things get complicated when Emma finds out that she’s pregnant… Director Samantha Lee follows her debut feature BAKA BUKAS (OAFF 2017) with a light-hearted coming-of-age film that explores female agency in a story that allows characters to truly explore who they love and what sort of future they want for themselves.
